portraits & style.07

Style is basically the manner in which the artist portrays his or her subject matter and how the artist expresses his or her vision. Style is determined by the characteristics that describe the artwork, such as the way the artist employs form, color, and composition, to name just a few.

  • Look at the works of 4 different portraits by famous artists such as Frida Kahlo, Vincent van Gogh, Andy Warhol and Gustave Courbet. What makes their styles different?

  • Select one of these artists or someone else and create a selfportrait reminicent of their style.

  • use a double page spread to create your compositon.

  • You may choose your own media.

It's always a good idea to see how other artists work. While you do not want to copy a style or image, you can get a lot of ideas and inspiration by observing the work of others.
